By default, in the Windows 10 operating system, Segoe UI font is used for all elements. Unfortunately, you cannot change it in the OS settings – there is simply no such possibility. Instead of the usual letters and numbers in the text, we can see some intricate hieroglyphs or “krakozyabry” that do not carry any logical meaning. Most often this is caused by incorrectly set values in the regional settings options.
This often happens when a user works with a Russian keyboard layout in an OS with English localization. The problem is that in such a system for programs working with Cyrillic, processing of the necessary characters is not provided. This is also true for other languages that do not have Latin characters, such as Japanese, Chinese, or Greek.

The essence of the problem
As a rule, we can observe incomprehensible characters not in every program. For example, characters depicted in Cyrillic in the name of programs are displayed correctly. But if we run the installation program for distributions that support the Russian language, we get a “Chinese letter” unknown to us.
And, perhaps, the main problem lies in the fact that in the existing OS, by default, there is no support for Cyrillic characters. In practice, this may mean that you installed the English distribution kit with an extended Russification package installed on top of it. However, the latter failed to solve the problem correctly.
The first thing users try to do in such a situation is to reinstall the operating system from scratch. However, not everyone will agree to this, because someone may intentionally want to work with an English-speaking environment. And in this environment, Cyrillic characters, in theory, can and should be displayed correctly.
How to change the default font?
All interface elements in Windows 10 use “Segoe UI” font by default and there is no setting to change it in either “Windows Settings” or “Control Panel”. However, if you want to give your system individuality, there is still a way out – you can replace the standard font using the Windows Registry Editor.
Before making changes to the registry, I recommend creating a restore point using the built-in System Restore utility. It is useful to do this not only when changing the font, but also before changing any system settings. If the result of the changes does not suit you, you can quickly roll back the system to the state before making these changes, instead of manually setting the previous parameters.

Choose a font to replace the standard one
Let’s open the “Fonts” section in the personalization window, as described at the beginning of the article, and select the font you like, which supports both Cyrillic and Latin. To verify this, click on the font and in the window with its description, type in the input field “Enter data to preview the font” text in Russian and in English. If the font does not support any language, empty squares will be displayed instead of letters.

Deleting a font has only one serious disadvantage – if you need it again, you will have to find and download the file again. Therefore, the Windows developers have added an alternative way. You do not remove the font from the system completely, but only hide it. This perfectly solves the problem with selection in text and image editors. The program simply does not see hidden fonts and does not offer to select them. Moreover, if the layout uses a style that is on the computer (even if it is in a hidden state), it can be edited without problems.

You can get into the catalog with fonts without the Run menu. The Fonts folder, as you can see in the screenshot, is located inside the Windows system directory. It is open for viewing and editing by default.

Code pages are responsible for mapping characters to bytes. There are many such tables, and each of them works with different languages. Often krakozyabry appear when the wrong page is selected and matched. To fix this, we have to work with the registry. For this:
Being in the same section of the CodePage, in the right part of the window, look for item 1252. Double-click on it and in the window that appears, change the current value of 1252 to 1251.
After the performed manipulations, we send the computer to reboot so that the applied changes take effect.
Using system settings to solve a problem
First of all, let’s try to fix the error through the control panel. To enter it, right-click on the “Start” menu button and select the appropriate item in the drop-down list.
In the new window that opens, we find the “Clock, language, region” section.
In the new section, select the category of regional standards.
Here we can set the date and time option, as well as the numeric separator, the number of fractional values, the format for negative numbers, the system of units, etc.
Here we are also invited to change the format of monetary units and their designation. Here we can also configure local settings for different regions, including text characters displayed in the system. It is these options that we are interested in. To select them, go to the “Advanced” tab at the top of the window.
Go to the non-Unicode language selection section, and then select the option to change the system language.

How to remove fonts using the system registry
